Characteristic Dorsal fin with I-VII-VIII and 11 soft rays; anal fin with 11 soft rays; pectoral fin with 19-21 soft rays; lateral line scales 47-54; gill rakers 1 + 6-8. Teeth villiform or granular in a broad band on jaws, prevomer and palatines. Scales small and deciduous, anterior 3 or 4 scales in lateral line spined. Two or preopercular spines, the uppermost one especially prolonged into a bayonet-shape. Interopercular flap absent.
habitats Inhabit demersal marine environment, occur from near shore to 100 m depth, on sand or mud bottoms. Larvae and juveniles rarely enter mangrove areas, most especially the lower reaches. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to the Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Australia. 
Utility Fished through all years, edible, palatable.
